FAQ

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis, also known as trance, is a relaxed state of focused concentration.  It is a naturally occurring state.  Everyone goes in and out of trance many times a day e.g when you lose yourself in a good book or when you’re walking a familiar route.

Whilst in trance your mind is more open to suggestion.  Hypnotherapy uses trance as it allows your mind to focus on and become much more receptive to beneficial suggestions and positive change.

In Solution Focused Hypnotherapy we use psychotherapeutic techniques based on the most recent evidence emerging from neuroscience.  We draw on the best elements of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Brain Based Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy.  The addition of trance allows us to help our clients to accelerate the learning and positive progress gained from these psychotherapeutic techniques.

What Does Hypnosis Feel Like?

In Solution Focused Hypnotherapy we generally use hypnosis (trance) at the end of the therapy sessions.  Many people are surprised at how “normal” it feels and generally experience a very relaxed, calm, positive daydream-like state.

Will I Be in Control During Hypnosis?

Yes, you will be in control at all times during hypnosis (trance).  It is a similar state to daydreaming and you can come in and out of trance at will.  In Solution Focused Hypnotherapy we use beneficial suggestions during trance, often related to feelings of calmness and control, confidence, self-esteem and letting go of unhelpful memories.  This helps you to change unhelpful thought patterns and to find solutions that are right for you. Your mind will reject anything not in your interests and you will remain completely in control.

Can Everyone Be Hypnotised?

Hypnosis (trance) is simply a relaxed state of focused concentration.  In the sessions you are guided into a relaxed state.  In Solution Focused Hypnotherapy the “depth” of relaxation or trance that you achieve isn’t important to the effectiveness of the overall therapy.

Is Hypnosis Safe?

Yes. Hypnosis (trance) is a safe and natural state and you remain in control at all times.

Does Hypnotherapy Work on Everyone?

Whilst there are never any guarantees of success research has demonstrated the effectiveness of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy.  Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is based on the most recent evidence emerging from neuroscience.  It draws on the best elements of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Brain Based Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy as well as using hypnosis (trance). Whilst Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is very powerful it’s important to recognise that client commitment and active engagement in the process is also key.

How Many Hypnotherapy Sessions Will I Need?

The number of therapy sessions depends on many different factors.  This includes the nature of the issue that you are coming for help with and how well you engage with the therapy.  For example, I would give you an MP3 recording to listen to at night when you are going to sleep.  It supports the work in the therapy sessions and it makes a difference.  If you do regularly listen to the MP3 recording you generally need fewer therapy sessions to achieve the outcome you want.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is not like some forms of therapy that people can enter into for a year or more.  In general, most of the time for most things most people achieve the results they want within 8 to 12 sessions of therapy.  Sessions are generally held a week apart so the therapy works quickly.  Fewer sessions may be needed for therapy for specific phobias and/or performance improvement.

Does Hypnotherapy Work Online?

Yes.  Research has shown that online hypnotherapy can be as effective as in-person therapy.  You may want to work in-person, solely on-line or do a combination of both.  In my practical experience the therapy works just as well online as in person.

How Much Does Hypnotherapy Cost?

I offer a free initial consultation of up to an hour.  This allows you to meet me, understand more about the approach and ask any questions you want

Clients generally find the Initial Consultation very informative and helpful.  There is absolutely no obligation to go ahead with the therapy after that Initial Consultation.  If you do decide to go ahead the therapy sessions are charged at £75 for a session of up to an hour.  At that Initial Consultation I can give you a general idea of how many sessions you will need to achieve the outcome you are looking for.
